Town Beautification Committee

The mission of the Town Beautification Committee is to improve and maintain the appearance of the public areas of Dewey Beach by facilitating and sponsoring such projects as the planting of trees and flowers, the purchase and installation of benches, preserving natural resources of the town, and working with town government to address problems relating to the overall environment of our area.
Chair: Diane Hanson   EMail me

Overview of the committee’s activities:

The Civic League Beautification Committee helps the Town of Dewey Beach look attractive for our property owners, residents, and visitors by not only helping to purchase flowers and trees, but to help in the planting and maintenance of these plantings.

Many new trees have already been planted as a result of your efforts at the spring and fall beautification days in 2007.  We also have a new flowerbed of daylilies at the Life Saving Station to bring beauty to our town meetings this coming summer.  Potted flowers have been distributed throughout town to add even more color and beauty. . In addition we have organized a volunteer task force to help clean up debris and litter.

Did you know that communities with lots of trees and landscaping enjoy a 12% increase in business?  If that isn’t enough, they also enjoy lower crime, noise, and calmer traffic! So how about helping us make Dewey a calmer, quieter town that’s good for business and looks terrific too? We always could use help in our endeavors. To volunteer or to make a contribution contact Diane Hanson, Chair of the event, at 302 226 5998 or dianehanson@deweybeachcivicleague.org.   .

Dewey Beach “Goes Native” on
Unity for Beauty Day—May 17, 2008

The Dewey Beach Civic League sponsored its second annual Unity for Beauty Day on Saturday, May 17, 2008. Nearly 60 Civic League members and Dewey property and business owners joined together to plant flowers, trees and other greenery in the median strips along Highway One. Flowers were also planted in front of Town Hall and the Lifesaving Station where the Town Commissioners and official town committees meet and some trees were planting on Van Dyke Avenue along the edge of Ruddertowne.

“We’re very excited to continue our tradition of making Dewey the special place we all know it can be. And this year we “went native” by installing plants and trees that are native to this area and will hopefully flourish in our seaside environment,” Diane Hanson, the chair of Unity for Beauty Day, said.

All the plantings were designed and supervised by Todd Fritchman of Envirotech Environmental Consulting, Inc., in Milton, DE. Todd is president of the firm and doubles as the captain of the Dewey lifeguards in summers. He donated his time and his firm’s resources to design the planting areas and also obtained the plantings for us at wholesale prices. As an Aquatic Biologist, Todd specializes in plantscapes that are native to the area that will survive the Nor’easters that plague Dewey in the winter as well as the heat waves of the summer season.

The plant selection also allows for year-round beauty with species that produce red berries in winter and flowers in spring.  The plants include:
Custom low-growing showy native wildflower and conservation grass mix custom developed by Ernst Seed specifically for the microclimate of the highway island.  The species will be low growing and provide color throughout the growing season.

Herbaceous Species:
175 American Beach Grass (Ammophila breviligata)

Shrub Species:
19 Red Chokeberry (Aronia arbutifolia)
18 Coast or Swamp Azalea (Rhododendron viscosum or virginiana
14 Black Chokeberry (Aronia melanocarpa)
14 Winterberry Holly (Ilex verticilata)

“The Civic League was proud to sponsor this event again,” said David Main, president of the Civic League. “And afterward, we finished the day in classic Dewey style---with happy hour at The Starboard.”

Thanks again to everyone.  This was a terrific joint effort and gives us much to build on.

Spring 2008 Town Beautification a success.
Hi Everyone,
Thank you all for your help on May 17.  The Unity for Beauty Day was an unqualified success and the town looks terrific. Everyone involved deserves enormous credit!  Nearly 60 people—residents, property owners and business owners—worked together to plant and clean up. Many others worked behind the scenes in planning and procuring supplies.

Everyone was enjoying themselves. To see some great photos of the event, go here.  The names of all volunteers and donors are listed below.

Summer Volunteers Needed:  Now that we’ve beautified our town, I’d like your help in keeping it that way.  Would you be willing to monitor your street for litter?  All you need to do is call the police if you see someone littering or find a litter problem on the street. The police will put extra patrols on streets where we’ve had the most complaints and they are committed to enforcing our litter laws. If you’re able to help with this or would be willing to help in planning for our fall event, please contact Diane Hanson at 302 226 5998 .

Tree Planting and Garden Clean Up

  • Meet at Sunset Park at 8:00 a.m
  • Bring garden equipment, especially shovels, picks, trowels, wheelbarrows, and gloves
  • We will be planting 14 trees in the median. For public safety reasons, it’s important to start at 8:00 a.m. when there is less traffic. We must be done by 10:30 for the same reason.
  • To volunteer, please email Diane Hanson.  (Advance notice helps with the planning. )

Thanks,

Diane Hanson
